The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is presented as a well-preserved example of the late Italianate house type found near Methuen's town center and its mills. It is associated with workers at the Methuen Cotton Mills and other Spicket River factories. The form says it keeps integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship, and that few similar houses survive in such fine condition.","narrative":"Built around 1875 on Pelham Street in Methuen, this 2½-story Italianate house reflects the housing that grew up near the town center and its mills. It has a rectangular plan with a side-hall entry. A projecting bay, bracketed eaves and a round-arch window in the gable end decorate the front facade. Windows have projecting lintels and two-over-two sash, and the clapboard-sided walls rest on a granite foundation. A simple pitched-roof barn at the rear appears to date from about the same time. The house was listed because it is a well-preserved home tied to workers at the Methuen Cotton Mills and other factories along the Spicket River. Similar houses remain in town, but few survive in such fine condition. The survey records no major alterations, and the property has served as a private residence and a dance school.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used as a private residence and dance school at the time of the survey; the form lists no major alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.706185-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/70/7901/63790170/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002392.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002392/7208001ccd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002392/7208001ccd-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"EraserGirl","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_50_Pelham_St.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">EraserGirl</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_50_Pelham_St.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790170","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_50_Pelham_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5914373"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/house-at-50-pelham-street-84002392/"}
