It was built by one of the earliest congregational societies in the North Country and reflects New England architectural influences carried across Lake Champlain. It has been in continuous use as a house of worship since 1834.","narrative":"Built in 1834 of coursed gray limestone quarried on nearby Willsboro Point, this church sits on a wooded hilltop above the hamlet of Willsboro and the Boquet River. Its rectangular plan, engaged east tower and Gothic-arched windows blend a traditional New England meeting house with Gothic detailing. High winds destroyed the original two-tiered open belfry in the early 1950s, and an exact replica was installed in 1983. Inside, the vestibule, window moldings, chancel recess and cove ceiling survive, along with late nineteenth-century pews and opalescent glass windows. A parish hall was added in 1936 but is not considered part of the historic significance. The congregation was formally founded in 1833, after Reverend Marshall Shedd, who arrived from Massachusetts in 1831, donated the hilltop site. The church is regarded as a rare surviving example of its type in the Champlain Valley and Adirondack foothills, and it has served continuously as a house of worship.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific date 1834)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular church incorporating Neoclassical and Gothic features; New England meeting house form with Gothic details","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied and in active use as a house of worship; condition rated excellent; the open belfry was rebuilt as a replica in 1983.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.281953-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84002391.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002391/e6e1b5c26f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002391/e6e1b5c26f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Willsboro_Congregational_Church_Nov_10.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Willsboro_Congregational_Church_Nov_10.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317812","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willsboro_Congregational_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8022488"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/essex-county/willsboro-congregational-church-84002391/"}
