It is a well-preserved example in an area that has seen considerable demolition and alteration. It retains integrity of location, setting, design and workmanship.","narrative":"Built around 1880, this two-story clapboard house on Annis Street in Methuen's Arlington Mills neighborhood is an Italianate dwelling with a gable roof, sidehall plan and projecting tripartite bay. Standard trim, including a dentil cornice, a bracketed entry hood and diamond-pattern window enframements, gives a modest house an attractive appearance. Annis Street was among the first streets in the western part of the Arlington District to be developed, driven by the expansion of the Arlington Mills along Stevens Pond on the Spicket River. The mills employed thousands of Lawrence and Methuen workers but owned little housing, so speculators built inexpensive homes for sale to woolen mill workers. This house represents that type of worker housing. It was listed because it survives in good condition in an area with considerable demolition and alteration, retaining its location, setting, design and workmanship, and because of its architectural character.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used as a private residence; the form reports no major alterations, no outbuildings, and that the house has not been moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.08838-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/96/7901/63790196/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002387.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002387/176b7e6b24-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002387/176b7e6b24-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.0","author":"EraserGirl","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_13_Annis_Street.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">EraserGirl</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_13_Annis_Street.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790196","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_13_Annis_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715567"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/house-at-13-annis-street-84002387/"}
