It shows Federal period characteristics in its form and details and differs from the later nineteenth-century double houses in the area. With the early mill buildings gone, it is a rare surviving artifact of the village's history.","narrative":"Built around 1815 at 14-16 Market Street in Wappingers Falls, this two-story frame double house stands near the creek gorge where early mills operated. Its gabled, rectangular form has two three-bay units with offset entrances, a central chimney and original clapboard siding. The northern unit keeps its twelve-over-eight sash, while the southern unit has replacement windows, and the rear wing of the northern unit was raised to two stories. A nineteenth-century shed behind the house also contributes. The house is considered significant as the only workers' residence to survive intact from the first phase of industrial growth in the village, when grist mills in the gorge were being converted to printed cotton textile production. Its tall, plain form and prominent central chimney reflect a New England design taste of the period. It is named for John Mulhern, the earliest documented owner, who ran a tavern. The Dutchess Company later acquired the property and held it into the twentieth century.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a residence, as it was originally; condition listed as fair, with no known threats.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.093298-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84002376.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"84002380","name":"Wappingers Falls Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/wappingers-falls-historic-district-84002380/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312664","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulhern_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6933992"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/mulhern-house-84002376/"}
