It served as the home of the Duchess Company's superintendent. The architect and builder are unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an intact example of managerial-class housing in an industrial mill village and the best large suburban house surviving relatively unaltered in the area. It shows the shift from Greek Revival to Picturesque styling. Its size and its separation from workers' housing reflect the superintendent's middle position in the mill hierarchy.","narrative":"Built around 1848, this two-story brick house at 120 Market Street in Wappingers Falls was the residence of the superintendent of the Duchess Company printworks. It sits on less than one acre at the base of the Wappingers Falls gorge, south of the mill area and workers' housing. The five-bay symmetrical facade, center-hall double-pile plan, end chimneys, and sidelit entrance follow Greek Revival practice. A pointed gable wall dormer, scroll-sawn vergeboards, and a wraparound verandah added Gothic character; part of the verandah survives on the north side, while a smaller porch replaced the rest on the facade. The house is described as the best large suburban house in the area to survive relatively unaltered. Its scale and its distance from workers' housing mark the superintendent's status between mill hands and owners. The company owned it until the twentieth century, when a later superintendent bought it for private residential use. It remains a visual landmark of the nineteenth-century industrial community.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival with Gothic (Picturesque) embellishment","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a residence; condition is marked deteriorated on the inventory form, and no threats to the building are known.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.361101-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84002371.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002371/f7c5986768-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002371/f7c5986768-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dutchess_Company_Superintendent%27s_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dutchess_Company_Superintendent%27s_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312666","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutchess_Company_Superintendent%27s_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5317481"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/duchess-company-superintendents-house-84002371/"}
