Its architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The house is a rare surviving example of the simply designed, large-scale residences built in the Greek Revival period for Taunton's rising industrialist and merchant classes. It and the Tisdale-Morse Estate are the only standing central-hall Greek Revival buildings in the central area. It is also associated with Charles Vickery, a textile manufacturer, banker and postmaster, and with Nathaniel Fish, mayor of Taunton from 1897 to 1899.","narrative":"Built in 1830 at 56 Summer Street in Taunton, this Greek Revival house is a large, simply designed residence of the kind erected for the city's rising industrialist and merchant classes. It has a central hall plan, a gable end facing the street, and a one-story portico on fluted columns that wraps around the facade and one side. Large eave returns and chimneys emphasize the roofline. The builder is recorded as either John Williams or Charles Richmond, an early mill operator. By 1842 it belonged to Charles Vickery, a textile manufacturer, banker and postmaster and the son of a sea captain and merchant. The Vickery family kept it until 1899, when it passed to Nathaniel Fish, who served as mayor of Taunton from 1897 to 1899. Together with the Tisdale-Morse Estate, it is one of the only standing central-hall Greek Revival buildings in the central area. A late twentieth-century office addition at the rear is the main alteration noted.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Used as a residence and doctor's office; an office was added at the rear in the late 20th century.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.299162-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/51/7893/63789351/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002252.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002252/f6bdc7df66-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002252/f6bdc7df66-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vickery-Baylies_House,_Taunton_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vickery-Baylies_House,_Taunton_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789351","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vickery-Baylies_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7925352"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/bristol-county/vickery-baylies-house-84002252/"}
