It is now used as a Legion Hall.","why_significant":"The building is an important architectural component of Taunton's central commercial district and one of the few stone buildings in the city. It has bold Gothic Revival details and a long association with local social and humanitarian history, including a mission chapel, a charity use, and a historical society hall.","narrative":"Built in 1867 on Cedar Street in Taunton, this Gothic Revival hall of coursed fieldstone began as the Union Mission Chapel. Local philanthropist Joseph Dean financed it as a place of worship for parishioners who could not afford pews in the First Congregational Church. In 1881 the Association of Charities adopted the building to aid the local poor. From 1886 to 1926 it served as Historical Hall, the artifact repository and meeting place of the Old Colony Historical Society, and in 1926 it was sold to the American Legion, which still uses it. The rectangular building faces the street with its gable end. It has a limestone-trimmed entrance beneath a peaked hood mold, tall stilted arched windows with peaked stone lintels, and staggered corner quoins. Stone construction is uncommon in Taunton, and the hall is considered an important part of the central commercial district. Its architecture and its long ties to social and humanitarian work account for its listing.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Owned by the American Legion since 1926 and in use as a Legion Hall; windows were altered around 1970.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.256691-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/37/7894/63789437/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002235.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002235/83978fe3b4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002235/83978fe3b4-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Marcbela (Marc N.
