The architect is unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it Taunton's most elaborate Second Empire style cottage. It shows a level of ornament more often found on larger houses and keeps elements of its original landscaping, including a circular footpath in front. It retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association.","narrative":"Set at 179 Highland Street in Taunton, this small one-story cottage is a well-preserved example of Second Empire design, dated to about 1875. It has a Mansard roof covered in wood shingles, gabled dormers with round-arched windows, and an engaged corner tower with a gable roof. The front porch has openwork posts and a wooden valence, and the windows are irregularly placed with 1/1 and 2/2 sash. Paired round-arched windows sit in the tower gable. Clapboards cover the walls. Deed research shows the house was built between 1871 and 1879, deeded by the City of Taunton to A. White in 1879, and sold in 1880 to Albert Sweet, who is probably its original resident and is linked to it until 1908. The property was listed because it is Taunton's most elaborate Second Empire cottage, with ornament more typical of larger houses and surviving original landscaping, notably a circular footpath in front of the house.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Second Empire","criteria":[],"status_note":"Used as a residence; the form states it has not been altered or moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.143121-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/17/7893/63789317/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002221.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002221/cece3b32ed-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002221/cece3b32ed-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TauntonMA_AlbertSweetHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TauntonMA_AlbertSweetHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789317","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Sweet_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4711286"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/bristol-county/sweet-albert-house-84002221/"}
