It retains all period features and trim and is one of a small number of intact side hall plan Italianate houses in Taunton. It is notable for the ornate detailing of its porch, cornice and window surrounds.","narrative":"Built around 1865 at the corner of Tremont and Shores Streets in Taunton, this Italianate house follows a side hall plan and is clad in clapboards. It is probably the home of N. S. Mason, likely its original owner, who lived there in the 1870s and early 1880s. Entry is through a side bay with a double-leaved door, sidelights and a molded surround. Windows range from formal parlor-floor windows with transoms to second-story windows with cap moldings and round-arched gable windows in keystoned surrounds. A porch on square posts with brackets wraps the facade and side, ending in a polygonal corner projection with its own roof. Brackets, fascia and eaves returns define the roofline. The house keeps its period features and trim, and has not been altered or moved. It was listed for its architecture, as one of a small number of intact side hall Italianate houses in the city, with particularly ornate porch, cornice and window detailing.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; the form states it has not been altered or moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.10089-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/11/7893/63789311/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002178.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002178/65f9c3b35b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002178/65f9c3b35b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:58_Tremont_Street,_Taunton_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:58_Tremont_Street,_Taunton_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789311","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._S._Mason_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715738"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/bristol-county/mason-n-s-house-84002178/"}
