It is described as the sole surviving example of this mid-19th-century residential type in Taunton. It retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association.","narrative":"Built around 1850 at 172 County Street in Taunton, this clapboard house was probably constructed for N. Eldridge, a laborer, in what was then a small farming settlement around the junction of County and Williams Streets. Eldridge's widow continued to live there until the 1880s. The house is a broad-gabled, central-hall Greek Revival design with two upper levels within its gable. Its doorway has a classical pilaster and entablature surround with sidelights, and the 6/6 sash windows have wood lintelboards and sills. Corner pilasters and eaves returns define the walls. This house type was common in the 1840s across northern Worcester County, southern New Hampshire and the Connecticut River Valley, but it is very rare in Southeastern Massachusetts. The house is virtually unaltered and is considered the only surviving example of the type in Taunton, which is the basis for its architectural significance. A small frame shed stands on the lot, and the house is still used as a residence.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; the form states the building is unaltered and has not been moved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.714875-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/1/7893/63789301/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002114.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002114/91797e0f39-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002114/91797e0f39-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eldridge_House,_Taunton_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eldridge_House,_Taunton_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789301","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eldridge_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5354177"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/bristol-county/eldridge-house-84002114/"}
