It has brick ends and a classically detailed entrance surround, and later alterations did little to harm its architectural integrity. The nomination states it meets Criterion C as a preserved, excellent example of high-style Georgian architecture in the community.","narrative":"Built around 1798 as the residence and farm of Abiezar Dean, this house at 68 Dean Street in Taunton is a five-bay, two-and-a-half-story Georgian building. Its front and rear walls are clapboard, while the end walls are brick. The centered entrance has a semicircular fanlight under a pediment, supported by tapered pilasters, and the windows hold twelve-over-twelve sash. In 1905 George Hartshorn, a descendant of the founders of the Dean Cotton Mill, bought the property and added east and west wings and dormers. The east wing was moved to Longmeadow Road in 1915 and converted to a residence. Later rear additions and Georgian Revival dormers have done little to disturb the house's character. It has served as a nursing home since the 1930s. The house was listed for its architecture: it is considered one of Taunton's four finest Georgian-influenced buildings, comparable to the McKinstrey House on High Street, and it retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, setting and association.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a nursing home from the 1930s to the present, per the form (recorded 1980).","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.503136-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/49/7894/63789449/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002111.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002111/67a5e220c0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002111/67a5e220c0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dean-Hartshorn_House,_Taunton_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dean-Hartshorn_House,_Taunton_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789449","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dean-Hartshorn_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5245957"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/bristol-county/dean-hartshorn-house-84002111/"}
