It retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association. It also lies along Dean Street, a linear area representing the city's early agricultural settlement.","narrative":"Built around 1825 for Lloyd Dean, a member of Taunton's well-known Dean family, this cottage at 164 Dean Street blends Federal and Greek Revival design. It has a symmetrical five-bay facade, clapboard walls, six-over-six sash windows and interior end chimneys. The central entrance is framed by molded trim with cornerblocks and surrounds a large leaded transom and sidelights. Successive generations of farmers and merchants lived in the house and owned the surrounding land until 1889, when it was sold to Dr. J.W. Hayward. The house sits along a stretch of Dean Street that reflects the early agricultural settlement of the city in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was recognized under architectural criteria as Taunton's finest and best preserved transitional Federal/Greek Revival gabled cottage, retaining its original location, setting, materials and workmanship. The site covers about 0.43 acre, and the boundaries follow the present lot lines.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal/Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Present use is residence; described as exceptionally well preserved, unaltered and unmoved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.711774-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/99/7894/63789499/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002107.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002107/0cbcff11f2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002107/0cbcff11f2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TauntonMA_LloydDeanHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TauntonMA_LloydDeanHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63789499","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lloyd_Dean_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6662380"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/bristol-county/dean-lloyd-house-84002107/"}
