It holds about fifty-nine historic buildings dating from 1761 to the turn of the 20th century, plus five mid-20th-century intrusions.","why_significant":"The district is a well-preserved grouping of late 18th and 19th century residential, commercial, industrial and institutional buildings. It includes outstanding examples of several building types and regional style variants, many of them homes of notable local citizens. It reflects the social and economic development of a small rural Berkshire community, including the Dalzell axle industry, and has archaeological potential.","narrative":"South Egremont Village is a compact Berkshire County settlement of about 375 acres stretched along Routes 23 and 41 beside Karner Brook. Its roughly fifty-nine historic buildings range from a 1761 brick gambrel-roofed cottage, the only one of its type in the county, to Federal and Greek Revival houses, a church built in 1832-33, and the 1831-32 Mount Everett Academy. Local carpenters James Reasoner, Abner Hull and Jona Baldwin built several houses sharing a distinctive elongated fanlight detail. The village grew around mills, a marble business, shoemaking and, from 1845, David Dalzell's axle factory, whose workers' housing on Shop Hill still stands. Decline in the 1920s gave way to a preservation-minded revival in the 1930s led by Major Hugh Smiley, who promoted the village to tourists. Because so much of the 19th century streetscape survives, the district was listed for its architecture, its notable residents and its picture of rural community development. The Dalzell factory site also holds archaeological potential.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"James Reasoner, Abner Hull, Jona Baldwin","architectural_style":"Federal, Greek Revival, and late 19th century styles incorporating Gothic Revival, Italianate and Shingle Style treatments with vernacular design","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Condition is described as good, with minimal alterations (mostly porches and ells). The district retains its 19th century appearance. Several buildings remain in use, including the Egremont Inn, the library and the village school.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.336073-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/56/7941/63794156/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84002086.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002086/8fa84bcafc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84002086/8fa84bcafc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_O%27Neil_House,_c_1880,_South_Egremont_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_O%27Neil_House,_c_1880,_South_Egremont_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794156","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Egremont_Village_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7567166"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/berkshire-county/south-egremont-village-historic-district-84002086/"}
