Route 12, about three miles south of Greene, Chenango County, New York. It was built between 1914 and 1916 and designed and built by DeVern Bates.","why_significant":"The barn is described as one of the best examples in New York State of a fully developed round barn with a central silo. It has a center silo with silage chute, radial stanchion layout, stud wall system, a large entrance bay for farm machinery, and two circular hay fork tracks. Its pressed iron sheathing, splayed lintels, double-hipped roof and cupola, and round milk house also make it distinctive.","narrative":"Three miles south of Greene, beside Route 12 in Chenango County, a round dairy barn about 80 feet across was built between 1914 and 1916. DeVern Bates designed and built it for James Clifford Young after an earlier barn on the site burned. Bates had worked as a builder at the Tarbell Farm in nearby Smithville, where he may have encountered published barn designs. The barn has two stories, a double-hipped gambrel roof, a cupola, and walls sheathed in pressed iron that imitates brick. Inside, 47 stanchions circle a central silo, and two hay tracks hang from the roof rafters. A large entrance bay lets farm machinery reach the upper level. Its design resembles Wisconsin and Illinois barn plans published between 1890 and 1910. It is considered one of the best examples of a fully developed round barn with a central silo in New York State. The barn remains an active dairy barn in good condition, with silos added in the 1970s.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"DeVern Bates, designer and builder","architectural_style":"Central plan (round) dairy barn","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still in use as an active dairy barn and in good condition; silos and a shed addition were added to the north in 1974-75.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.786258-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84002072.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312289","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_Round_Barn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8058397"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/chenango-county/young-round-barn-84002072/"}
