Adderton, with five early twentieth-century frame outbuildings.","why_significant":"The house combines folk building features, such as half-dovetailed log walls and shed porch rooms, with commercially produced mantels and stamped chimney brick. It reflects the mid-nineteenth century era of small farming and rural merchandising in Piedmont North Carolina. It is also linked to Stephen Adderton, a farmer and storekeeper, and to the Badgett family, who have owned it since the late nineteenth century.","narrative":"Set in a field overlooking a branch in the Jackson Hill community of southern Davidson County, this two-story farmhouse dates to about 1850. It has an I-house form with a gable roof, exterior end chimneys and full-length front and rear sheds that hold central porches flanked by small rooms. The walls are half-dovetailed logs, possibly reused from an earlier building, while the interior has seven-inch tongue-and-groove sheathing and Greek Revival mantels made by commercial millwork. The chimney bricks carry uniform stamps showing factory production. Stephen L. Adderton, a farmer and storekeeper who died in 1878, probably built or remodeled the house, and an 1856 plat shows a dwelling and store on his land. His daughter married into the Badgett merchant family, and the property has stayed in that family since the late nineteenth century. The house is notable for blending folk construction with store-bought finishes, which is what a rural storekeeper of the period might be expected to use. Five frame outbuildings stand nearby.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1850","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"I-house form with Greek Revival mantels; folk and popular mid-nineteenth century domestic architecture","criteria":["A","B"],"status_note":"Marked as private ownership and in good condition, with the exterior siding and window frames replaced in the twentieth century.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:51.232581-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/19/7176/47717619/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/84001988.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717619","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adderton%E2%80%93Badgett_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18350191"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/davidson-county/adderton-badgett-house-84001988/"}
