It was the office for Windsor Cotton Mills, designed by Lafayette Holt.","why_significant":"It belonged to one of five cotton mills founded in Burlington by descendants of Edwin M. Holt between 1883 and 1892, which helped make the city a nationally important textile center. Windsor was the only one of these mills acquired by northern investors in the early 1900s. The office survives virtually intact, showing careful detailing in late nineteenth-century mill office construction.","narrative":"Built in 1890, this two-story brick office once served Windsor Cotton Mills in East Burlington, North Carolina. Brothers James H. Holt, Jr. and Robert L. Holt, grandsons of textile pioneer Edwin M. Holt, founded the mill, and textile technologist Lafayette Holt designed it. The office is nearly cubical, laid in common bond, with a decorative brick parapet and a hip-roofed front porch on chamfered wooden posts with sawnwork spandrels. Windsor was one of five Holt-family mills established in Burlington between 1883 and 1892 that helped turn the city into a major textile center. In 1903 it was sold to a New Jersey company and stayed under northern ownership until 1912, making it the only one of the five acquired by outside investors. Later owners expanded and modernized the factory, which was heavily altered, while the office remained largely untouched. That intact condition is the main reason only the office was nominated.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Lafayette Holt","architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"The office survives remarkably intact and is in good, unaltered condition. The adjacent factory has been considerably altered, and the mill complex remains occupied by an industrial owner.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.124352-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/48/7172/47717248/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/84001930.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001930/527bf33e6c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001930/527bf33e6c-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Windsor_Cotton_Mills_Office.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Windsor_Cotton_Mills_Office.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717248","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windsor_Cotton_Mills_Office","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17560797"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/alamance-county/windsor-cotton-mills-office-84001930/"}
