It includes a one-story brick mill with ancillary buildings, sixteen frame houses and a store along Lakeside Avenue, Kent Avenue and Hatch Street.","why_significant":"Lakeside Mills was one of five cotton mills founded in Burlington between 1883 and 1892 by descendants of the Holt family, which helped the town become a major textile center. It is the least altered of Burlington's late nineteenth-century mills, with its factory complex virtually intact. Most of the adjoining mill village also survives, keeping its semi-rural layout.","narrative":"Lakeside Mills is a former cotton mill village on the northern outskirts of Burlington, North Carolina. Built in 1892-93, it includes a long, low brick mill of slow-burn heavy-timber construction with an 85-foot smokestack, several small ancillary buildings, sixteen frame houses and a store. The mill was designed by textile technologist Lafayette Holt for brothers Walter L., Edwin C. and Samuel M. Holt, members of the family that drove Burlington's growth as a textile center. The company made chambray cloth for work shirts and later cheviots and checks. It never expanded much, so few houses were added and the village kept its original layout, green space and semi-rural character. Although many houses have altered porches, siding and chimneys, all retain their original forms. The district is regarded as the least altered of Burlington's late nineteenth-century mill complexes and as an unusually well-preserved example of its type. The mill later served a hosiery company and then as a warehouse.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899; 1900- (specific dates 1892-93)","architect_builder":"Lafayette Holt, Designer","architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","B","C","D"],"status_note":"Condition rated good and altered, original site. The mill was converted to a warehouse in 1979, and its new owners plan to preserve it as they expand a dyeing and finishing operation. The office/cloth room is used for storage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:50.876637-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/56/7172/47717256/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/84001922.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001922/cd764035d8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001922/cd764035d8-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Government &amp; Heritage Library, State Library of NC from Raleigh, NC, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lakeside_Cotton_Mills,_Burlington,_NC_(8170260887).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Government &amp;amp; Heritage Library, State Library of NC from Raleigh, NC, United States</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lakeside_Cotton_Mills,_Burlington,_NC_(8170260887).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717256","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lakeside_Mills_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17560784"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/alamance-county/lakeside-mills-historic-district-84001922/"}
