The congregation hosted the first Great Revival meeting in North Carolina in 1801 under the Rev. William Paisley. The church and store are also presented as examples of rural vernacular architecture of the late nineteenth century.","narrative":"Clustered around a rural intersection about five miles north of Mebane, this group of three resources includes a brick Presbyterian church, its cemetery and a former general store. The one-and-a-half-story church was built in 1876 on a ridge among oak trees and later gained educational wings. The cemetery, dating from about 1792, holds more than 850 tombstones, the oldest dated 1796, and records the families who settled the area. Across the road, the Stainback Store grew from a store established by the Murray brothers in 1841. About 1888 John Wesley Stainback reused lumber from the congregation's old frame church to enlarge it. The site matters for its religious history: in August 1801 the congregation hosted the first Great Revival meeting in North Carolina. It also illustrates the importance of church and store in a farming community, and the plain vernacular building style of the late nineteenth century. The store has been vacant since 1973.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799, 1800-1899","architect_builder":"Brown Gordon (designed and built the 1876 church, per the narrative); the form's Builder/Architect box says Unknown","architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"The Stainback Store has been vacant and deteriorating since 1973; the church remains in use as a religious building.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.938045-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/72/7188/47718872/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/84001912.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001912/38eb1a92b5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001912/38eb1a92b5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mebane Historical Museum","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Crossroads_Presbyterian_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mebane Historical Museum</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Crossroads_Presbyterian_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718872","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_Roads_Presbyterian_Church_and_Cemetery_and_Stainback_Store","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5188410"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/alamance-county/cross-roads-presbyterian-church-and-cemetery-and-stainback-store-84001912/"}
