From 1918 to 1956 it housed the Hillsboro Western Union office, which was the hub of cotton-trading activity in the county.","narrative":"This two-story brick and cast-stone commercial building at 107 South Covington Street in Hillsboro dates from 1900 to 1905. Its most noticeable feature is a large Richardsonian Romanesque arch on the ground floor. Above the arch, three windows sit beneath a high triangular gable, and the central section is framed by two tall tower-like buttresses with small round lights at the base and a castellated cornice. Apart from a closed-off transom arch and a later canopy, the building looks much as it did in the early twentieth century. It is considered the finest surviving, relatively unaltered Richardsonian Romanesque commercial building in Hillsboro, with a striking arch and romantic corner turrets. From 1918 until 1956 it served as the Hillsboro Western Union office, which was the center of cotton-trading activity in the county. The building is in good condition and is currently used as a realty office.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Richardsonian Romanesque","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Physical condition is stated as good; current use is a realty company office.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:19.522807-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/19/9696/40969619/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/84001896.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001896/fd5d5543e7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001896/fd5d5543e7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Western_Union_Building_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Western_Union_Building_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40969619","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107319720"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/hill-county/western-union-building-84001896/"}
