Tarlton. It is also known as the Skelton Building.","why_significant":"The building is presented as a good example of the vernacular brick commercial architecture once common in Hillsboro. It is one of the few such buildings whose facade has remained relatively unaltered. It is also noted for its role in local commerce, housing a bakery, grocery store and restaurant by 1895.","narrative":"Located at 110 East Franklin Street in Hillsboro, this one-story brick commercial building was constructed in 1892 after B.D. and G.D. Tarlton bought the lot in December 1891. By 1895 it housed a bakery, a grocery store and a restaurant. Extensions were added to the rear in 1897 and again between 1908 and 1925. The most distinctive feature is a high, corbeled brick parapet, with a low-pitched classical gable at the center supported by blind corbeled-brick machicolations and layered brick and cast-stone entablatures. The ground floor was modernized in the early twentieth century with large plate-glass display windows. The building was recognized as a good example of the vernacular brick commercial architecture once common in Hillsboro, and as one of the few whose upper facade remains relatively unaltered. It was judged significant for architecture and commerce. The property is described as in good condition and currently vacant.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899, 1900-","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular brick commercial","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as vacant, with physical condition described as good.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:18.702526-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/7/9696/40969607/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/84001892.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001892/226b6d8bd1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001892/226b6d8bd1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tarleton1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tarleton1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40969607","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107319730"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/hill-county/tarlton-building-84001892/"}
