It is also one of the commercial center's best preserved early-20th-century buildings. Its association with the Gebhardt Bakery adds to its commercial significance.","narrative":"Built in 1905 at 119 East Franklin Street in Hillsboro, this two-story brick building was constructed to house the Gebhardt Bakery. It has a rectangular plan and a five-bay facade. A small iron-railed balcony projects above the central entrance, and the decorative cornice is framed by corner turrets. Arched second-story windows are topped with rusticated stone lintels, and cast-stone lions' heads support the canopy cables. Its wooden storefront is one of few in the downtown center that remains virtually intact. The brick oven once at the rear and the interior wooden showcases have disappeared. Charles Gebhardt established the bakery in 1901 and moved it into this building in 1905. After his death in 1920, his son-in-law, Albert Farmer, took over the business. The building was listed for its architecture and its role in local commerce, as one of Hillsboro's finest commercial structures and one of the best preserved early-20th-century buildings in the commercial center. It is described as vacant and in good condition.","period_of_significance":"1900-","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular commercial","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as vacant, in good physical condition and unaltered.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:18.826682-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/5/9696/40969605/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/84001873.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001873/550bd4f3ab-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001873/550bd4f3ab-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gebhardt_Bakery_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gebhardt_Bakery_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40969605","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107319723"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/hill-county/gebhardt-bakery-84001873/"}
