It is also a significant small-scale work by Mauran and Russell, a firm more often known for monumental Houston buildings, and an unusual building type preserved in relatively unaltered condition.","narrative":"Built in 1912-1913 at 2700 Albany Street in Houston, this three-story red brick building, finished in white stucco, was designed as an orphanage and resembles an oversized Mediterranean villa. Its red barrel-tile hipped roof, broad overhanging eaves, ground-floor arcaded loggia and rows of round-arched windows give it a distinctive profile. The upper floors held large dormitories with sleeping porches across the front. The home was named in memory of Kezia Payne DePelchin, a Houston social work pioneer who cared for orphaned and disadvantaged children before her death in 1893. Houston women organized the home in her honor, and Harriett Levy donated the lots for this larger building. The St. Louis firm Mauran and Russell, also responsible for the Rice Hotel, designed it. It is considered the oldest surviving children's home in Houston and served as an orphanage until 1938. Later it housed the Rams Club, and restoration began around 1980.","period_of_significance":"1900- (specific dates 1912-1913)","architect_builder":"Mauran and Russell","architectural_style":"Mediterranean villa","criteria":[],"status_note":"No longer serves as an orphanage; in the 1980s it was used as a club (bar) while restoration work was in progress.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:21.73243-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/9724/40972450/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/84001759.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001759/f0908b628e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001759/f0908b628e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jim Evans","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DePelchin_Faith_Home_--_Houston,_Texas.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim Evans</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DePelchin_Faith_Home_--_Houston,_Texas.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972450","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110000963"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/harris-county/depelchin-faith-home-84001759/"}
