The form calls it the only monumental example of Beaux Arts sculpture from this period in the state. Residents have objected to proposals to move it for traffic reasons.","narrative":"At the intersection of 25th Street and Broadway in Galveston, a 22-foot bronze figure of Victory looks north from atop four granite columns. One hand rests on a sword hilt and the other holds out a laurel crown. Figures of Defiance and Peace sit at the base of the columns, along with two groupings. Four bronze high-relief panels show the defense of the Alamo, the Goliad massacre, the charge that won the Battle of San Jacinto, and Santa Anna before General Houston. Galveston businessman and philanthropist Henry Rosenberg gave $50,000 for a monument in memory of the heroes of the Texas Revolution of 1836, and his executor, Major A.J. Walker, carried out the wish. Sculptor Louis Amateis designed it, the granite came from a Washington, D.C. firm, and the bronzes were cast in Rome. Thousands attended the April 21, 1900 dedication. Residents have resisted suggestions to relocate it, and it is described as the state's only monumental example of Beaux Arts sculpture from this period.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Sculptor Louis Amateis, Washington, D.C.; granite portion by J.F.
