It is also significant as the home for some 83 years of Judge William Owen Davis, a prominent lawyer, state senator and Gainesville's first city-manager-era mayor, and his family.","narrative":"Built in 1891 for lawyer William Owen Davis and his wife Anna, this two-story Queen Anne house in Gainesville was constructed of local red brick at a cost of $8,500 and is said to be one of the town's first brick houses. A U-shaped veranda with turned posts and cut-out ornament wraps the entrance side, lateral gables break the cedar-shingled hipped roof, and tall corbeled chimneys mark the side walls. Inside, an elaborate pine staircase, ornate woodwork, six fireplaces and a stained-glass transom survive. A substantial two-story brick outbuilding and a garage from about 1920 remain at the rear. Alterations have been modest, mainly aluminum replacement windows and an enclosed back porch. Davis practiced law across north Texas and southern Oklahoma, argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, served as a state senator, drafted Gainesville's city charter, and became its first mayor under the city-manager system. His family lived in the house for about 83 years.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899 (specific date 1891)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied and in excellent condition, used as a private residence; alterations include aluminum windows and an enclosed rear porch.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:18.571743-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/83/9715/40971583/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/84001633.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001633/686d5a2cb8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001633/686d5a2cb8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DavisHouse1_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DavisHouse1_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40971583","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107319185"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/cooke-county/davis-william-and-anna-house-84001633/"}
