It is one of the earliest automobile assembly plants in the Southeast and marks the start of the auto industry in Atlanta. It also served as Ford's Southeastern headquarters from 1915 to 1942.","narrative":"Built in 1914-15 on Ponce de Leon Avenue in Atlanta, this four-story reinforced-concrete building served as both a Ford assembly plant and the headquarters of the company's Southeastern operations until 1942. Designed by John Graham, it has a face-brick front and west side trimmed with terra cotta and colored tile, large industrial sash windows, and a rooftop clerestory over a central lightwell and craneway. Inside, the front showroom and office area keep decorative plaster, walnut partitions and a marble-treaded stair, in contrast to the plain factory floor behind. The plant reflects Ford's decision to decentralize production, which lowered freight costs and improved distribution. Model T, Model A and V-8 cars were assembled here between 1915 and 1937. It is one of three surviving early Ford assembly plants in the South, with the others in Houston and Dallas. The War Department bought it in 1942 and later used it as an induction center. The building was vacant when nominated.","period_of_significance":"1914-15","architect_builder":"John Graham","architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant and unoccupied, with showroom windows boarded up with plywood; plans called for reuse as rental apartments and shops.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.362384-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/84001080.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001080/52f27aa92a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001080/52f27aa92a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Jeff Clemmons","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ford_Atlanta_1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeff Clemmons</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ford_Atlanta_1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208176","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Motor_Company_Assembly_Plant_(Atlanta)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5467858"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/fulton-county/ford-motor-company-assembly-plant-84001080/"}
