It is important as a transition between the earliest railroad-type flats and the full courtyard buildings that came to typify suburban apartments. It was also praised in a period directory of apartments for its sun parlors, views and convenient location.","narrative":"Built in 1913 at the southeast corner of Ridge Avenue and Main Street in Evanston, this three-story apartment building rises over a raised basement and holds twenty-one apartments of four, five and six rooms. Thomas McCall served as both architect and owner. The exterior is chocolate brown brick trimmed in blue Bedford stone, which forms sill bands, accents window corners and shapes miter-arch motifs over the entries and in the parapets. Every apartment has a sun porch, and the two- and three-bedroom units have fireplaces. The largest apartments face Ridge, then called Ridge Boulevard, and are stepped back for light and ventilation. A period directory of better-class North Side apartments praised its sun parlors, views and nearby schools, shops and transportation. It is regarded as one of Evanston's finest and as a transitional type between early railroad-style flats and later courtyard buildings. A courtyard lies at the rear. The roof was replaced with asphalt shingles in 1980.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Thomas McCall, architect and owner","architectural_style":null,"criteria":[],"status_note":"Reroofed with asphalt shingles in 1980; otherwise no current use is stated.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.667398-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/28/8909/28890928/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/84001028.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001028/88fe1591b5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84001028/88fe1591b5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Andrew Jameson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RidgeBoulevardAptsEvanstonIL.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Andrew Jameson</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RidgeBoulevardAptsEvanstonIL.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28890928","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ridge_Boulevard_Apartments","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q96401973"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/cook-county/ridge-boulevard-apartments-84001028/"}
