It is the west building of a three-building group of two-flats.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is significant as one of three two-flats designed as variations on a Gothic theme. Its significance is described by reference to the fuller statement for the neighboring building at 2517 Central Street, as part of a thematic group of suburban apartment buildings in Evanston.","narrative":"Built in 1927 on the north side of Central Street in Evanston, this two-flat is the west building of a three-building group designed around a Gothic theme. Arthur Jacobs was the architect, and Bond, Ahrlen and Co. served as developer and general contractor. The facade is orange brick with limestone trim, divided into three bays separated by wide corner piers. These piers are sloping brick buttresses ending in limestone coping stones and pinnacles that rise above the roofline. A green tile pent roof caps the three-window central bay, and a limestone parapet crowns the splayed corner bays. Blind Tudor arches with an abstracted shield design top the second floor, and leaded casements with fixed transoms light the first floor. A bronze canopied doorway on the east side sits beneath a blind arched window. The building was listed because, like its two neighbors, it offers a handsome variation on the shared Gothic design. The only alteration recorded is a 1960 interior kitchen remodeling.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Arthur Jacobs, architect; Bond, Ahrlen and Co., developer and General Contractor","architectural_style":"Gothic variation (Tudor-arched detailing)","criteria":[],"status_note":"Interior kitchen remodeling in 1960; a two-car frame garage stands at the rear of the lot.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.288422-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/67/8908/28890867/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/84000983.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000983/7346801cb4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000983/7346801cb4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Zol87 from Chicago, Illinois, USA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Building_at_2523_Central_Street.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Zol87 from Chicago, Illinois, USA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Building_at_2523_Central_Street.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28890867","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Building_at_2523_Central_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134577805"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/cook-county/building-at-2523-central-street-84000983/"}
