Arthur Jacobs designed it for the developer Bond, Ahrlen and Co.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that the building and the two two-flats just west of it were designed and built together as a group. Taken as a group, they are described as the best examples of two-flat construction in Evanston. They are variations on a theme and are compatible in scale, materials, design inspiration and quality of detailing.","narrative":"This two-flat at 2517 Central Street in Evanston, Illinois, was built in 1927 and is the easternmost of three similar buildings in a row on the north side of the street. Architect Arthur Jacobs designed all three for Bond, Ahrlen and Company, which acted as developer and general contractor. The building is faced in buff-colored brick with limestone trim, and its detailing is Gothic in inspiration. A projecting front bay groups three sets of leaded casement windows, one with a green stained glass shield, and brick buttresses separate the central windows from the splayed side bays. A green tile hipped roof covers the bay, topped by a gabled parapet with an escutcheon and limestone pinnacles. A doorway under a bronze canopy on the east side has two Tudor-arched doors. Each apartment has three bedrooms and two baths, and a two-car garage sits at the rear. The three buildings were listed because they were built as a group and represent the best two-flat construction in Evanston.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Arthur Jacobs, Architect; Bond, Ahrien and Co., developers and General contractor.","architectural_style":"Gothic-inspired detailing","criteria":[],"status_note":null,"vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:35.226476-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/63/8908/28890863/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/84000980.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000980/76d06dbb43-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000980/76d06dbb43-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Zol87 from Chicago, Illinois, USA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Building_at_2517_Central_Street.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Zol87 from Chicago, Illinois, USA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Building_at_2517_Central_Street.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28890863","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Building_at_2517_Central_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134577789"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/cook-county/building-at-2517-central-street-84000980/"}
