It is a good example of Renaissance (palazzo) Revival style with Beaux-Arts and Neo-Classical influences applied to a small-town federal building. Three original elevations and the lobby interior remain intact.","narrative":"Standing at the corner of South Sixth Street and East 11th Avenue in Cordele, this two-story limestone post office was built in 1912/1913 on a former residential lot bought in 1909 for $6,000. Its symmetrical facades show Beaux-Arts massing, with coupled Ionic pilasters on the Eleventh Street side, arched main-floor windows, a stone cornice with dentils and a decorative parapet. Inside, the customer lobby has terrazzo floors with a pink marble border, black marble baseboards and a marble-tread stair. A white brick addition was built in 1966. The design was supervised by James Knox Taylor, Supervising Architect of the U.S. Treasury, who favored classical styles meant to express democratic ideals and durable quality in federal buildings. This was among his last works before he retired in 1912. It is valued as a fine example of Renaissance Revival architecture brought to a smaller community, with three original elevations and the lobby interior preserved.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"James Knox Taylor","architectural_style":"Renaissance (palazzo) Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed as publicly owned and occupied, used as a government building; altered by a 1966 addition, with three original elevations and the lobby interior still intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.472889-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/84000977.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000977/9ca47ed77d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000977/9ca47ed77d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Michael Rivera","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cordele_Post_Office.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Rivera</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cordele_Post_Office.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"04000339","name":"O'Neal School Neighborhood Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/oneal-school-neighborhood-historic-district-04000339/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207716","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Post_Office_(Cordele,_Georgia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16902247"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/crisp-county/us-post-office-cordele-84000977/"}
