It holds some of the neighborhood's earliest surviving houses, including 1850s and 1860s masonry residences, and a range of 19th and early 20th century styles. It stands as a remnant of Sacramento's early development and settlement patterns.","narrative":"Six blocks of Sacramento's Alkali Flat neighborhood, along E and F Streets between 9th and 12th Streets, make up this district of 48 buildings, 46 of which contribute to its character. Most are one- and two-story wood-frame houses, with a few apartment buildings and a corner commercial-residential building at 530 12th Street. Three of the earliest houses, dating from the 1850s and 1860s, are brick, including the Greek Revival house at 1029 F Street and the Gothicized Italianate house at 1010 F Street. Queen Anne and Eastlake row cottages, Colonial Revival buildings and Moorish-Mission Revival apartments make up much of the rest. Alkali Flat was among the first residential areas in Sacramento, and large lots were split into smaller parcels by the 1870s, bringing cottages alongside earlier mansions. The district is listed as the largest of three residential areas in the neighborhood that still retain a 19th-century feel, and it records the city's early settlement and development. Some buildings are rehabilitated, while others are boarded up.","period_of_significance":"1853 to 1913","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mix of Greek Revival, Italianate, Gothic Revival, Queen Anne/Eastlake, Colonial Revival, Craftsman and Moorish-Mission Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Mixed condition: several buildings are rehabilitated or under rehabilitation, while a few are boarded up or vacant, and four vacant lots are scattered through the district.
