Ostergren.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it an excellent example of the \"S\" type courtyard building, cohesive in design and well fitted to its corner site. Despite small apartment sizes, the units have good light, views and cross-ventilation, along with quality finishes. It is also the most recent of three courtyard buildings on the east side of Ridge Avenue between Church and Davis Streets.","narrative":"Built in 1923 on the southeast corner of Ridge Avenue and Church Street in Evanston, this three-story apartment building follows an \"S\" type courtyard plan. A garden court opens onto Ridge Avenue, while a rear court brings light and ventilation to the Church Street apartments and those on the north side of the Ridge wing. Tudor details define the design: half-timbered gabled bays mark the courtyard and street entrances, and leaded casements sit over doors set in Tudor arches. The walls are red brick with limestone trim. Inside are nine two-bedroom, twelve one-bedroom and twenty-nine studio apartments, the studios being three-room units whose dining room can serve as a bedroom. Units open two to a stairhall and have hardwood floors, oak trim and pull-out beds. The building was listed for its cohesive design, its fit to a corner lot, and its comfortable compact apartments. A 1977 rehabilitation repaired the masonry and added matching storm windows.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Robert C.
