The architect and builder are unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the clubhouse is significant for its continuous association with the welfare and development of the Redondo Beach community from 1922 to the present. It is also described as an excellent example of the vernacular bungalow tradition of Southern California coastal towns. It is one of the few remaining historic structures in the original Redondo Beach townsite.","narrative":"Built in 1922, this single-story redwood clubhouse at 400 South Broadway in Redondo Beach was constructed for the Woman's Club, a group formed in 1908 after an open newspaper invitation. The brown-painted board-and-batten building follows the vernacular bungalow tradition, with a long gable roof, French windows with transoms, and a marble cornerstone. Inside, a beamed auditorium has a stenciled wooden proscenium arch, redwood paneled walls and hardwood floors. Alterations have been modest: foundation repairs, updated kitchen and restroom fixtures, and a rear porch added around 1951. The club used the hall for cultural events, recitals, lectures, and civic fundraising and wartime efforts. Urban renewal, the construction of King Harbor, and condominium development removed most early buildings from downtown Redondo Beach, leaving this clubhouse as one of the largest surviving examples of its type and period in the South Beach communities. The club has operated continuously for philanthropy, civic and educational betterment.","period_of_significance":"1922","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Vernacular bungalow tradition","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied; in good condition and still used as a clubhouse by the club that built it.
