It holds houses and one church dating from the 1880s to the 1930s.","why_significant":"The district is argued to be significant in architecture for good local examples of Victorian, Neoclassical, Bungalow and Gothic styles over about fifty years. It is also significant in landscape architecture for its green, almost rural residential setting, which contrasts with the commercial area. In local history, its residents contributed to the economic, social, political and religious life of Winder.","narrative":"North of Winder's central business district lies a residential neighborhood of about 18 acres that grew up after railroads reached the town in the 1880s and 1890s. Its houses range from small Victorian frame cottages to the ornate 1902 Smith-Baxter House, with scrollwork, shingles and a wrap-around porch. Neoclassical houses with monumental porticos, many Bungalows, and a few 1930s brick Tudor houses fill out the streets. The only non-residential building is the Gothic First Baptist Church, built between 1907 and 1914. Large lots, mature trees, shrubs and hedgerows give the area a green, nearly rural character that sets it apart from the commercial core. Residents included merchants, manufacturers, bankers and dentists who shaped the town's economic and civic life. By the mid-1930s the district looked much as it does now. Later commercial growth altered its edges, but an intact historic neighborhood remains. It was listed for its architecture, landscape design and local history.","period_of_significance":"1880s-1930s","architect_builder":"Various","architectural_style":"Victorian, Neoclassical, Bungalow, Gothic and Tudor styles","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Described as an intact historic residential neighborhood with a few intrusions and non-historic buildings; condition marked good and altered. Present use is private residence and religious.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.142613-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/84000888.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000888/150dd708a4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000888/150dd708a4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Chris Pruitt","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:41_W_Candler_St_Winder_Oct_2012_1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Pruitt</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:41_W_Candler_St_Winder_Oct_2012_1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206923","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Broad_Street_Residential_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14686760"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/barrow-county/north-broad-street-residential-historic-district-84000888/"}
