It is significant in commerce as an intact part of Winder's historic central business district, and in transportation for its link to the two railroads that framed the town's commercial growth.","narrative":"Jackson Street Commercial Historic District covers parts of four blocks in downtown Winder, Georgia, northeast of the county courthouse. Its mostly two-story brick buildings date from the 1880s to the 1930s and sit close to the street. Typical features include brick corbelling, stone stringcourses, slightly arched windows, transoms above storefronts, and locally produced iron storefronts. Development followed the arrival of two railroads, the Gainesville-Midland in 1884 and the Seaboard Air Line in 1892, which spurred rapid growth. Commerce spread down Jackson Street after Smith's Hardware moved there shortly after 1900, and shops replaced earlier warehouses. The district later served as a commercial center for Barrow County, formed in 1914. Development largely stopped by 1930, and only tenants changed afterward. Later alterations, including the loss of a warehouse and the 1965 remodeling of a bank building, weakened some areas, but a core of historic commercial buildings remains. It was listed for its architecture, commerce and transportation associations.","period_of_significance":"1880s-1930s","architect_builder":"Various","architectural_style":"Commercial style (late-19th and early-20th-century commercial buildings)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Condition is listed as good and altered; the district is occupied and in commercial use, with some storefronts and interiors altered over time.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.510362-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/84000885.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000885/a128b64746-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000885/a128b64746-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Chris Pruitt","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:E_Athens_St_Winder_Oct_2012.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Pruitt</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:E_Athens_St_Winder_Oct_2012.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206915","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q141702360"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/barrow-county/jackson-street-commercial-historic-district-84000885/"}
