It is also associated with Dr. Joseph Bennett Riddle (1870-1947), a prominent local physician and surgeon connected with Grace Hospital.","narrative":"Built around 1892, this two-and-a-half-story frame house on West Union Street in Morganton is an exuberant example of Queen Anne architecture. It has a high hip roof, gabled bays, balconies, bay windows, wraparound porches and sunburst motifs in the woodwork. A three-story tower was added around 1910. Inside, high ceilings, oak floors, and Victorian mantels survive. The street was long the preferred address of Morganton's professional and business families, and this is the most ornate and substantial Victorian home remaining there. Dr. Joseph Bennett Riddle bought it in 1904. Born in Yancey County in 1870, he trained in medicine and surgery, moved to Morganton in 1907 to be near Grace Hospital, and later served as county coroner, chief of staff and president of the county medical association. He lived in the house until his death in 1947. After decades of decline, including use as a boardinghouse, a restoration begun in 1973 revived the house and encouraged renewed interest in neighboring older homes.","period_of_significance":"Ca. 1892","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Occupied as a private residence, in excellent condition; restored after 1973 following a period as a boardinghouse in the 1960s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:50.400632-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/93/7192/47719293/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/84000524.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000524/4e5054316a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000524/4e5054316a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Warren LeMay","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Doctor_Joseph_Bennett_Riddle_House,_Morganton,_NC.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Warren LeMay</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Doctor_Joseph_Bennett_Riddle_House,_Morganton,_NC.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"87001931","name":"West Union Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/west-union-street-historic-district-87001931/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719293","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Joseph_Bennett_Riddle_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18157297"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/burke-county/riddle-dr-joseph-bennett-house-84000524/"}
