Main Street, Logan, Hocking County, Ohio, built in 1883-84 by Milt Gafney for Charles and Elizabeth McCarthy.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is the best representation of late nineteenth century commercial architecture in Logan. It shows Italianate features such as stone pilasters, carved lintels and a bracketed cornice, and it is one of only two remaining buildings of its type downtown. It also reflects Logan's commercial growth tied to the canal and railroads.","narrative":"Standing at the corner of Main and Market Streets in downtown Logan, this three-story brick building dates from 1883-84. Milt Gafney built it for Charles and Elizabeth McCarthy on a foundation of hand-quarried Ohio limestone. The upper floors have inset brick panels between pilasters, carved stone lintels and sills, and a bracketed cornice projecting about two feet. Over the years the ground floor held Harrington's Drug Store, then the Louis Bort Drug Store, where patent medicines were made in the back room, and later Blosser's Restaurant, opened in 1928. Law offices occupied the second floor, and the third floor housed the Cresent Club and later the Red Men's Lodge. A fire in 1980 gutted the interior, and the owners renovated it and restored the storefront. The building was listed for its architecture, as the best surviving example of Logan's late nineteenth century commercial development and one of only two Italianate commercial buildings left downtown.","period_of_significance":"1883-84","architect_builder":"Milt Gafney (for Charles & Elizabeth McCarthy)","architectural_style":"Victorian Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Gutted by fire in 1980, then renovated by the present owners, who restored the first-floor storefront as closely as possible to its original appearance.
