It also marks the early twentieth-century electrification of Chatham County, when the canal was reused for hydroelectric power from 1922. The masonry walls, dam and powerhouse are seen as representative engineering and industrial remains, and the site may yield further historical information.","narrative":"Beside the Deep River near Moncure, a 600-foot concrete dam, a 2,300-foot canal and a brick powerhouse record several chapters of local history. The present dam and powerhouse date from 1922, when the Moncure Manufacturing Company replaced an old log dam and reused an earlier canal to generate hydroelectric power. A 1,300 horsepower generator supplied electricity to Pittsboro beginning in September 1922, and Carolina Power and Light later took over the plant and retired it in 1962. Parts of the canal, including mortared stone retaining walls, appear to date from the mid-1850s, when the Cape Fear and Deep River Navigation Company built locks and dams to carry coal and other goods by water. The site was also a campground used by Lord Cornwallis after the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Together, the remains show how the same stretch of river served milling, navigation and electric power, and the property is recognized for its transportation, engineering and industrial history.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899, 1900- (specific dates ca. 1850-1855; 1922)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C","D"],"status_note":"Listed as in good condition and altered; the powerhouse generator was removed in 1962 when the facility was retired, and much of the metal sash and loading doors have been vandalized or removed.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:48.612779-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/59/7195/47719559/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/84000305.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000305/d13e3f4d7c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000305/d13e3f4d7c-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Burnie Batchelor, Photographer","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lockville_Hydroelectric_Plant,_Deep_River,_3.5_miles_upstream_from_Haw_River,_Moncure_(Chatham_County,_North_Carolina).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Burnie Batchelor, Photographer</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lockville_Hydroelectric_Plant,_Deep_River,_3.5_miles_upstream_from_Haw_River,_Moncure_(Chatham_County,_North_Carolina).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719559","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockville_Dam,_Canal_and_Powerhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18153738"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/chatham-county/lockville-dam-canal-and-powerhouse-84000305/"}
