It has a farmhouse built in 1798 with an 1880 wing and five historic farm support buildings on about one acre.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the farmstead recalls the eighteenth-century settlement and later farming development of Cutchogue. It is a remarkably unchanged, representative example of an eastern Long Island farm complex. Its modest buildings show local vernacular building and craft practices of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.","narrative":"This farmstead on New Suffolk Lane in Cutchogue, at the eastern end of Long Island's north fork, combines a clapboard farmhouse with a full set of farm support buildings. David Tuthill, a farmer descended from one of Cutchogue's first settling families, built the five-bay, center-chimney house in 1798. In 1880 a two-story wing doubled its size, reflecting the growth and prosperity of the family, which kept the property until the mid-1970s. Behind the house stand a wash house, shop, privy, garage and a large barn dated 1852, built with heavy timbers salvaged from a demolished eighteenth-century church, and later fitted with a water tower. The buildings are modest but little altered, and interiors keep plaster walls, wide board floors, wainscoting, paneled doors and original hardware. Surrounded by undeveloped farmland south of the village center, the complex is described as one of the most complete and best preserved farm groups on the north fork, illustrating local vernacular building and farming practice.","period_of_significance":"1700-1799 (specific dates 1798 & 1880)","architect_builder":"Unknown (house built by David Tuthill in 1798)","architectural_style":"Vernacular","criteria":[],"status_note":"Occupied private residence in good condition; the setting is described as a virtually intact agricultural landscape.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:43.195048-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/84000295.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000295/4fac873591-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000295/4fac873591-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Americasroof","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:David-tuthill.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Americasroof</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:David-tuthill.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322288","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Tuthill_Farmstead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5240536"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/tuthill-david-farmstead-84000295/"}
