Architect and builder are unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is locally significant as an early example of Queen Anne residential architecture and one of the earliest such houses on Cleveland's east side. It is also one of the few remaining houses from the period when the near east side was a significant residential neighborhood after the Civil War. Its medieval-inspired, English-style Queen Anne details are described as rare in Cleveland.","narrative":"Built about 1883, this 2½-story brick house at 3751 Prospect Avenue in Cleveland was the residence of Sarah Benedict, widow of George Benedict, owner and editor of the Cleveland Herald. It is a large, squarish Queen Anne house with a gambrel roof, angular siding in the gables, and projecting bays on the east and west sides. Horizontal frieze bands mark the second story and roof levels, with relief panels in the lower band and a diaper brick pattern in the upper. The house was listed because it is an early local example of Queen Anne design, built about twelve years before the 1895 average date of Queen Anne buildings in the east-side inventory. Its multi-paned windows, colored tile friezes and varied shingles recall the English form of the style, which is rare in Cleveland. It is also one of the few surviving houses from the near east side's post-Civil War residential era. The architect and builder are unknown.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":[],"status_note":"Exterior condition listed as good; present use residential in the inventory, though a photo shows a lease sign for 7,200 sq. ft. of office space.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:14.38472-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/84000220.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000220/6edf5c3a2e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000220/6edf5c3a2e-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sarah_Benedict_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sarah_Benedict_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100006160","name":"Midtown Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/midtown-historic-district-100006160/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71984626","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Benedict_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17509539"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/benedict-sarah-house-84000220/"}
