The house reflects the building practices of the Amish/Mennonite settlers in vernacular architecture. It also represents the lifeways of early settlers of Butler County and is part of a thematic group of Augspurger farms.","narrative":"This brick farmhouse of 1874 stands on Woodsdale Road in Madison Township near Trenton. It sits on part of \"Christholm,\" the home farm Christian Augspurger established in 1829 along the west bank of the Great Miami River. His original house burned in 1873, and his son Samuel, who received the farm in 1849, built the present two-story house. It has a central hall with open stairway, flat stone lintels and sills, a bracketed cornice and an unusual wide arched recessed entrance at the rear. Samuel invested in the Miami-Erie Canal, turnpikes, river dams, a grist and saw mill and the Beckett Paper Company; a fire at the paper company in 1880 led soon to his bankruptcy. A large bank barn, a summer kitchen with a brick bake oven and a family cemetery survive. The property was accepted for its Amish/Mennonite vernacular architecture and for what it shows of early settler life in Butler County.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Amish / Mennonite house type","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Inventory lists interior and exterior condition as poor, with the bracketed cornice deteriorating; the property is noted as endangered and zoned for industry, and a county landfill lies across the road.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:53:15.009664-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/84000209.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000209/8d535abaac-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000209/8d535abaac-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Samuel_Augspurger_Farm.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Samuel_Augspurger_Farm.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71984475","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Augspurger_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7410800"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/butler-county/augspurger-samuel-farm-84000209/"}
