Manning on the site of an 1869 atheneum.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is one of the finest examples of early twentieth century Colonial Revival civic architecture in Westchester County and is remarkably intact. It also holds a library with original Tiffany Studios decoration funded by local benefactors including Helen Gould. It has served as the village's municipal, library and theatre space since 1902.","narrative":"Irvington's village hall at 85 Main Street is a square, seven-bay Colonial Revival building of Flemish-bond brick with terra cotta and stone trim, raised on a stone foundation. A balustraded portico with Ionic columns and a pediment fronts the south facade, topped by a three-stage wood clock tower with four clock faces. Designed by architect Alfred J. Manning and completed in 1902, it replaced an 1869 atheneum on the same site. A property conveyance in 1892 required the village to build a hall with a library room and public hall. Local donors made completion possible: Frederick Guiteau endowed the library, and Helen Gould paid for its furnishings, which came from Louis Comfort Tiffany's studios. Lanterns, mosaic panels and a clock survive. The third-floor theatre fell out of use in the 1960s under fire codes, then was restored and reopened in 1981. Offices and the library have operated continuously, and the building remains largely unchanged.","period_of_significance":"1901-02","architect_builder":"A.J.
