It was built in 1893 to designs by J.Y. McClintock, with Ellsworth & Grant as builder.","why_significant":"The bridge is one of four historic links between the two river bank concentrations of Rochester's central business district. It is the third bridge on its site and the mate to the Court Street Bridge, both designed by McClintock. Its round-arch stone design may have been meant to echo the mid-nineteenth century aqueduct and bridges nearby.","narrative":"Andrews Street Bridge carries Andrews Street across the Genesee River in the center of Rochester. Completed in 1893, it has seven segmental arches, six of them spanning 36 feet with nine-foot rises, resting on five-foot-thick piers. Quarry-faced stone, probably sandstone, forms the arches and spandrel facing, while cheaper rubble backs the spandrels. J.Y. McClintock, a civil engineer serving as city surveyor, designed it, and Ellsworth & Grant built it at a cost of $67,000. It is the third bridge at this location and the companion to the Court Street Bridge. It was originally meant to carry buildings on either side, like the Main Street Bridge, but that plan was never carried out. The bridge is one of four historic crossings that tied together Rochester's downtown on both riverbanks and supported commercial growth. Later changes include a reinforced concrete roadway replacing paved stone and a newer iron railing replacing cast-iron. The bridge remains city-owned and in use.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Architect J.Y.
