Its basic form, frame construction and simple finish are typical of rural schools of that era, and few such schools survive. It remains a local landmark.","narrative":"Pantego Academy is a two-story frame school on Academy Street in Pantego, Beaufort County. Local citizens formed an educational association in 1874 and built the school as a private academy, replacing classes held above a store. It opened in 1875 with twenty-seven students and gained a reputation for quality despite money troubles. In 1907 it became a public school, and a 1910 bond issue paid for additions that gave the building its present look: side wings, a rear ell, a hipped portico with four juniper Doric columns, and an unusual wishbone stair. A belfry built in 1879 still holds its cast iron bell. The building was declared unsafe for classes in 1937, later served as offices and a lunchroom, and was bought by the Pantego Alumni Association in 1966. It was listed for its link to rural education and as a surviving example of a typical late nineteenth-century rural school. It now operates as a museum.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Vernacular rural school; early 20th-century additions with Doric portico and wishbone stair","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"A 2007 additional documentation sheet states the building has been undergoing restoration, is open to the public as a museum, and is occupied and in use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.026252-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/9/7190/47719009/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/84000114.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719009","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantego_Academy","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18155716"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/beaufort-county/pantego-academy-84000114/"}
