It was designed by the local firm Fuller & Delano.","why_significant":"The school reflects Worcester's rapid growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the city's commitment to educating its population, through a school building program in which six new schools were occupied in 1897. It is also a well-preserved local example of Renaissance Revival architecture by a prominent local firm. Integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship is described as high.","narrative":"Malvern Road School is a two-story brick schoolhouse at Malvern Road and Southbridge Street in South Worcester. Built in 1896 and occupied in January 1897, it was designed in two stages by the local firm Fuller & Delano. The western two-thirds, a four-room school, came first; the east end was added in 1907 to complete a symmetrical Beaux Arts scheme. Its Renaissance Revival details include a full entablature at the cornice, a Palladian window over the central entrance bay, and a classical porch with Ionic columns. The water table and belt course are marble, while the roof and porch cornices are wood. The school went up when Worcester was expanding quickly and building schools at a fast pace; six new school buildings were occupied in 1897 alone. At the time the surrounding area was sparsely developed, near Holy Cross College and open land. The building has had no major alterations since 1907 and was recorded as vacant.","period_of_significance":"1896-1907","architect_builder":"Fuller & Delano","architectural_style":"Renaissance Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant at the time of the survey; no major alterations after the 1907 addition.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.712333-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/35/7932/63793235/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/84000096.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000096/f2d08f7041-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/84000096/f2d08f7041-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pvmoutside","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Malvern_Rd._School.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pvmoutside</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Malvern_Rd._School.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793235","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malvern_Road_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6745085"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/malvern-road-school-84000096/"}
