The congregation is considered a Mother Church of Methodism in the county, with roots in the missionary work of Bishop Francis Asbury in the 1790s. The building was erected by congregation members under the Reverend Thomas A. Dorsey.","narrative":"Gilboa Methodist Church is a small, rectangular frame building completed in 1879 in the Salem community southwest of Morganton. It has clapboard siding, a standing seam metal roof, two sets of double entry doors, and a plain one-room interior with a semi-enclosed pulpit and a hand-carved wooden dove above an ogee-shaped blind arch. A cemetery with tombstones dating to the early 1800s faces the front. It is the oldest surviving frame church in Burke County and the third structure used by its congregation, which tradition links to a log church of about 1793 and to the work of Bishop Francis Asbury. Members built the church under the Reverend Thomas A. Dorsey, who donated the land, at a cost of about 700 dollars. It was dedicated in October 1879. Regular services ended in the mid-1940s, and the building has been largely vacant since the 1950s. It remains a well-preserved example of a vernacular rural church and of Methodist beginnings in the county.","period_of_significance":"1800-1899","architect_builder":"Unknown (built by congregation members under the leadership of the Reverend Thomas A.
