Schweinfurth with John J. Craig.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it a fine example of early 20th-century school architecture by a distinguished Boston architect, and it retains integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship. It is also significant in the history of Boston municipal architecture and was said to be the largest primary school in New England when built. It is the first of five school projects Schweinfurth designed for the City of Boston.","narrative":"Built in 1905 on Perrin Street in Boston's Roxbury district, the Sarah J. Baker School is a brick primary school with limestone trim, three classroom floors and a raised basement. It was named for Sarah J. Baker, the first woman principal to head a school district in the Boston system, who led the Dillaway School from 1884 until her death in 1905. Architect Julius A. Schweinfurth designed it with his chief draftsman, John J. Craig, and original drawings and blueprints survive. At completion it was said to be the largest primary school in New England, with 24 classrooms reached from stairs at either end rather than a central corridor, a plan the city's Schoolhouse Department requested. Corbeled brick, narrow arches and stone escutcheons give the exterior a rusticated look. It was listed for its architecture and its place in Boston's municipal building history, and it has since been converted to elderly housing.","period_of_significance":"1905","architect_builder":"Julius Schweinfurth; John J. Craig","architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated and used as elderly housing; the form notes only metal replacement windows altered the exterior. A later letter states the rehabilitation was denied certification over the window replacements.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:57.963069-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/3/7969/63796903/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83004285.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004285/cbcb8ceadd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004285/cbcb8ceadd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BostonMA_SarahJBakerSchool.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BostonMA_SarahJBakerSchool.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"84002890","name":"Moreland Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/moreland-street-historic-district-84002890/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63796903","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_J._Baker_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7422419"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/suffolk-county/baker-sarah-j-school-83004285/"}
