The first section dates from about 1735 and the house was enlarged between 1750 and 1770.","why_significant":"The nomination calls it one of the best remaining examples of early Dutch architecture in Queens, with colonial craftsmanship and characteristic Dutch taste. It is also tied to the Van Wyck family, early Dutch settlers in Queens, two of whose members served as delegates to the Continental Congress. The house remains on its original site.","narrative":"Overlooking Little Neck Bay in Douglaston, Queens, this two-and-one-half story wood-frame farmhouse began around 1735 as a one-room-plan house with a living hall and a chamber above. Between 1750 and 1770 it was enlarged to the south and west. The bay-facing west side became a five-bay facade with a Georgian-style cornice, and the walls are covered in long hand-hewn shingles. Inside, massive chamfered ceiling beams, an early staircase, Georgian mantelpieces and raised panelling survive. A small kitchen wing was added on the north in 1930. The house was listed as one of the best remaining examples of early Dutch architecture in Queens and as a rare surviving eighteenth-century Dutch Colonial farmhouse. It is linked to the Van Wyck family, who settled in Queens in the seventeenth century. Two of Cornelius Van Wyck's sons served as delegates to the Continental Congress, while a third remained a loyalist. Stephen Van Wyck inherited and enlarged the house.","period_of_significance":"c. 1735, enlarged 1750-70; kitchen wing 1930","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Dutch Colonial farmhouse with Georgian detailing","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as occupied, in excellent condition, on its original site and altered by a 1930 kitchen addition, and used as a private residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:50:41.530269-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/83004149.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004149/5481a69904-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004149/5481a69904-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Peter Greenberg","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cornelius_Van_Wyck_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Peter Greenberg</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cornelius_Van_Wyck_House.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"05000937","name":"Douglaston Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/douglaston-historic-district-05000937/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321167","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornelius_Van_Wyck_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5171462"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/queens/van-wyck-cornelius-house-83004149/"}
