It may also be linked to the early eighteenth-century settlement of the town through Joseph Taft, and it is clearly associated with Zadock A. Taft, a district trial justice and mill investor from the locally prominent Taft family.","narrative":"Zadock Taft House, at 112 South Main Street in Uxbridge, is a two-storey timber-frame residence with a rectangular main block, twin interior chimneys and a 1½-storey rear ell. Its symmetrical five-opening facade, cornice pilasters, six-panel entry door with sidelights, and slightly pedimented window caps mark it as a simple Greek Revival design. Exterior decoration appears to date from about 1845-1855, though the proportions and early sash shown in an 1855 map view suggest the building may be older and merely remodelled. The site may be tied to Joseph Taft (1680-1747), an early Uxbridge settler who served on the building committee for the town's first meetinghouse. The present house is most clearly associated with his great-grandson Zadock A. Taft, a district trial justice in the 1870s who operated a cotton and satinet mill and held an interest in the Rivulet Mill. Later changes include an early twentieth-century front porch and 2/2 sash. The house retains much of its original character and remains a residence.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a residence; the form notes an early 20th-century front porch and 2/2 sash as major alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.476755-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/5/7931/63793105/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83004148.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004148/460984ea3e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004148/460984ea3e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:UxbridgeMA_ZadockTaftHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:UxbridgeMA_ZadockTaftHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793105","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zadock_Taft_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8064167"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/taft-zadock-house-83004148/"}
