It is an exceptionally fine, well-preserved example of mid-18th-century vernacular architecture. It is also tied to the settlement of Uxbridge by the Taft family.","narrative":"This timber-frame house on Hazel Street in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, dates to about 1749 according to the town's 250th anniversary history. The original section is the west front of the building, a rectangular structure with a central chimney, granite foundation and gambrel roof. The asymmetrical facade has two windows south and one north of the central entry, with moulded window caps set into the cornice. Later changes include a Greek Revival entry from the 1840s and a rear ell from the mid-20th century. It is one of only five 18th-century gambrel cottages remaining in Uxbridge, and it keeps the character of a house type once common in the area. Aaron Taft is named as the first owner, though little is known about the owners. J.S. Taft, a farmer and lumber dealer, held the property through much of the 19th century and operated a small mill pond and sawmill nearby. The house retains its original use as a residence and its rural setting of fields and woods.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Timber-frame vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a residence, as it was originally; the form lists a garage as an outbuilding.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.538967-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/71/7935/63793571/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83004134.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004134/d137c1c4db-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004134/d137c1c4db-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Ksherin","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aaron_Taft_House,_Uxbridge,_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ksherin</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aaron_Taft_House,_Uxbridge,_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793571","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Taft_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4662473"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/taft-aaron-house-83004134/"}
