It was built for Israel M. Southwick.","why_significant":"The nomination cites the house's association with Israel M. Southwick, a local wool manufacturer and master mechanic. It also calls the house one of Uxbridge's most fully developed and well-preserved examples of Italianate architecture. The house retains integrity of location, design, setting and workmanship.","narrative":"This two-storey frame house at 70 Mendon Street in Uxbridge was built around 1860-1865 for Israel M. Southwick and remodelled about 1890. It rests on a dressed granite foundation under a pitched roof, with mostly 2/2 sash windows, bracketed window caps and a cornice with paired brackets. The symmetrical facade has a center entry topped by a Palladian motif at the second storey and a later dormer. A Queen Anne porch with a pedimented entry, circular pavilion and spiralled columns on panelled bases was added in front. Southwick was a wool manufacturer and master mechanic. In 1853 he and his brother-in-law Richard Sayles rented the Central Woolen Mill and made fancy cassimeres. During the Civil War the mill ran around the clock on government cloth contracts for uniforms. In 1866 the two men bought the Rivulet Mill, though Southwick sold his interest around 1872. The house is valued for this association and as a well-preserved local example of Italianate architecture.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate & Queen Anne","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Used as a private residence, the same use as the original; the form describes alterations including Queen Anne remodelling around 1890, 20th-century shingles and a partially glazed porch.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:56.447877-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/25/7935/63793525/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/83004133.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004133/7211e76522-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/83004133/7211e76522-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Ksherin","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Israel_Southwick_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Ksherin</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Israel_Southwick_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793525","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel_Southwick_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6087217"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/southwick-israel-house-83004133/"}
